By emphasizing accountability and social-emotional learning, it reduces racial disparities in discipline and addresses the root causes of misbehavior.
Key Aspects of Restorative Justice
Proactive & Responsive: Practices include building community through daily circles (80% of efforts) and responding to conflict through mediation, repair-of-harm circles, and peer mediation (20% of efforts).
Alternatives to Discipline: Moves away from "zero tolerance" to, for example, using conversation-based, peer-mediated small groups to resolve conflicts.
Core Principles: Focuses on empathy, understanding the impact of actions, and fostering a sense of belonging and safety.
