About the event

Faculty/Staff Workshop Training on Restorative Justice (RJ). In school disciplinary approach focusing on repairing harm, building community, and improving relationships rather than relying on punitive, exclusionary measures like suspensions. By emphasizing accountability and social-emotional learning, it reduces racial disparities in discipline and addresses the root causes of misbehavior.

Key Aspects of Restorative Justice

  • Proactive & Responsive: Practices include building community through daily circles (80% of efforts) and responding to conflict through mediation, repair-of-harm circles, and peer mediation (20% of efforts).

  • Alternatives to Discipline: Moves away from "zero tolerance" to, for example, using conversation-based, peer-mediated small groups to resolve conflicts.

  • Core Principles: Focuses on empathy, understanding the impact of actions, and fostering a sense of belonging and safety.
